 Indication  

  • Antidiabetic, oral alpha-glucosidase inhibitor, delays digestion of carbohydrates within the gastrointestinal tract.
 Fetal Risk  

  • Not teratogenic or embryotoxic in animals.
  • Less than 2% of oral dose is absorbed systemically.
  • No data available in human pregnancy but insulin is recommended for better control of mother’s blood glucose thereby preventing fetal and neonatal complications.
 Breast Feeding  

  • Excreted in small amounts in the milk of lactating animals.
  • Because many drugs are excreted in human milk, Acarbose should not be administered to a nursing woman
